Texas leads the nation in mass shootings, where it’s easier for a teenager to buy and open carry an AR-15 style assault rifle than it is to buy a beer. Texas is home to slightly more than 6,000 gun sellers, according to May 2022 licensing data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. That’s more than twice as many as any other state. Texas also led the U.S. in estimated minimum gun sales from 2017 to 2020, according to a new ATF report, and was first in most major categories of licensed gun sales. Texas also has had more people killed in mass shootings than any other state, according to data compiled by Everytown for Gun Safety stretching back to 2009, and the second-highest number of people killed in a single mass shooting, behind Nevada.
This is a state with the most permissive gun laws, and people are dying because of it. Nationwide, Texas and Florida (a state that’s gone deep red of late and led by a man who delights in torture) were responsible for about 20% of all reported multiple gun sales, the ATF report said. Texas Republicans pushed through the new permitless gun carry law, which allows residents to openly carry guns without a permit. Abbott devised, approved and signed the law against the advice of law enforcement officials. Abbott is an asshole.
